The Outsider by Stephen King (2018)

I wish I could remember enough to write a summary.

Here’s the problem with trying to write a short review of a book I listened to perhaps two years ago now: I don’t remember it.

I don’t even remember when I listened to it. I would have sworn it was in 2019 or 2020 but I’m seeing a file date on my Android phone that makes me think I finished it on 9/16/2018, an impossibly long time ago. Audible doesn’t make it easy to find the date that you listened to a book, which is stupid. That suggests there was a gap between 2018 and 2021 when I didn’t read or listen to any books, physical, ebook, or audiobook. Where did that time go?

Here’s what I do remember about The Outsider: I remember that Will Patton did a fantastic job reading it, as he always does. (He’s one of the greats.) I remember that a beloved character from the Bill Hodges trilogy made an appearance in the latter half. I remember it was police procedural-ish, as the Bill Hodges trilogy was.

That’s about all I remember. I don’t remember if there was anything supernatural about it or not. I don’t remember hating it, but I don’t remember loving it either. It must have been a typical Stephen King book.

So that’s my review, for what it’s worth.

Apparently there was a 10-part miniseries on HBO based on it. I shall have to watch it sometime. It’s a story that’s broadly in the same vein as something like Broadchurch, so I would imagine the show is like that, too.
