Games Of My Decade
Here’s a quick rundown of memorable games that I played throughout the decade. These are games that I played more-or-less continuously for a month or more (that I remember, at least). In between these games were plenty of others, but these are the ones that made the biggest impact on me. Age of Conan. 2010. I can’t find many records of what I played in 2010. Age of Conan, WoW. 2010. I can’t find many records of what I played in 2010. Age of Conan, WoW. (ref)
2011. Ditto for 2011. RIFT, Star Wars: The Old Republic. (ref)
2012. TERA, The Secret World, Guild Wars 2. Skyrim. Mid-2012 is when I started blogging specifically about games. (ref)
2013. Neverwinter, RIFT (Storm Legion), Final Fantasy XIV. Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood, Revelations. Tomb Raider.
2014. Final Fantasy XIV, Elder Scrolls Online, WildStar, ArcheAge, RIFT (Nightmare Tide). The Witcher 2, Far Cry 3, Dragon Age II. The year I switched my “invert mouse” preference.
2015. State of Decay, Banished, The Witcher 3, Dark Souls, Dark Souls II, Fallout 4. Guild Wars 2 (Heart of Thorns), Final Fantasy XIV (Heavensward), Star Wars: The Old Republic.
2016. ARK: Survival Evolved, Dark Souls III. Black Desert Online, World of Warcraft (Legion), RIFT (Starfall).
2017. Conan Exiles, 7 Days To Die, Mass Effect 1 (again), 2, 3, and Andromeda. Final Fantasy XIV (Stormblood), Guild Wars 2 (Season 2, Heart of Thorns, Season 3, Path of Fire).
2018. Fallout 4 (again), Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Dark Souls Remastered, RimWorld. Secret World Legends. The Last of Us Remastered (PS4). The year I bought a PS4 Pro.
2019. Dwarf Fortress! Sekiro, Bloodborne (PS4), Demon’s Souls (PS3). Death Stranding (PS4). The year I switched to PS4 gaming, apparently.
Game of the decade? It’s got to be Dark Souls and its sequels (including Bloodborne). Honorable mentions to BioShock Infinite, The Witcher 3, and RimWorld (all of which made a huge impact on me when I played them, but none of which I have bothered to load up and play a second time).
MMORPG of the decade? RIFT, at least as measured at the time of its launch. Best evolving MMORPG to survive the decade? Final Fantasy XIV, though it’s on its down slope going into 2020 unless they start upgrading that game engine. One of the reasons WoW continues to thrive is that they keep upgrading and re-inventing the game engine to keep it current.
