Game Of Thrones – Steam Backlog Bonanza [Blaugust 11]

Game Of Thrones, the game from 2012, not to be confused with all of the other Game Of Thrones games, was next on my Steam Backlog Bonanza. I bought it in 2013 in a $10 bundle with … I don’t even know what else. I played it for the first time yesterday. This is not a Nazgul, but in fact the character that you play at the beginning. It’s actually surprising that this game has been sitting here for almost six years.

It’s actually surprising that this game has been sitting here for almost six years. 2013 seems like a lifetime ago. Never occurred to me to try playing this game until I forced myself to.

As it turns out, I wasn’t missing much. I played for about an hour. Of all the games I’ve played so far, I would say this is the first one I can actually give a “poor” rating to.

It’s a role-playing game, played in a third-person perspective somewhat similar to a Bioware or Bethesda game. You take on the role of a guy in the Night’s Watch somewhere around the time of the events in the books. The story isn’t very good. The writing isn’t very good. The voice acting isn’t very good. The graphics aren’t very good. The music is just a copy of the music from the television show.

Fighting with your Night's Watch brothers.

The gameplay is not very good, either. The combat system is primitive and not very fun. Basically you select an enemy and left-click on them until they die. It reminded me a little bit of The Witcher 1. Yes, the one that had the terrible combat system that nobody should ever have copied.

I can’t really think of anything good to say about this game. Except, you know, they did successfully bring it to market, which is actually a really complicated process that not everyone can do. But overall, this was clearly a game that attempted to cash in on the Game of Thrones intellectual property, and licensing it is undoubtedly where they spent the majority of their development budget.

Live Stream - Game Of Thrones

Stream Production Notes: I almost cancelled the stream, because I didn’t want to tear myself away from binge-watching The Terror on Hulu, a television series that is far, far better than this game turned out to be. I had to turn off the music to avoid copyright claims, because it played the iconic Game Of Thrones music right there big as life on the title screen. Not much else to say. The most enjoyment I derived from the experience was trying to match the gruff Batman-style voice of the character I played. It was a bit of a waste of an hour.

Previously on the Steam Backlog Bonanza: Viscera Cleanup Detail: Shadow Warror.
